Mark was one of the kindest, most dedicated people I know. We became friends over the plight of abandoned mine drainage in the Indian Creek Watershed, more than 130 discharges throughout the 126 square mile watershed. I remember times where our rubber boots were sucked down into the red sludge then talking about how the boots disintegrated several days later.
I was working for the Mountain Watershed Association at the time. The group was just forming over a fight to protect Indian Creek and its tributaries from more underground coal mining. It was a serious battle, and I spent many 60-70 hour weeks working on the problem. Mark worked for the Western PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Restoration at the time.
One day he stopped by the office and said "Get your coat. I want to show you something.". We drove to the Indian Creek Gorge, drove as close as we could and hiked the rest. I was overwhelmed by the pristine beauty of the white water, waterfalls, and tall hemlocks as we hiked around the rocky bed of Indian Creek. It was breathtaking.
He looked at me and simply stated "I wanted you to see what you are fighting for."
MWA is now a strong advocacy group. The gorge is now accessible by bike trail. Mark showed me what we were fighting for. He will be missed.

Mark was a man of humility and service, committed to a greater good. Mark's knowledge of the difficult technical challenges of acid mine drainage remediation was unique in this region. His grasp of chemistry and hydrology enabled him to drive the restoration of many watersheds degraded by careless and poorly regulated coal mining across western Pennsylvania.
He personally designed the acid mine drainage treatment project employed by the Chestnut Ridge Chapter of Trout Unlimited to restore Glade Run, a tributary to Dunbar Creek and the Youghiogheny River. When Mark began to lend his expertise to this project in 1995, there were no brook trout surviving in Glade Run. It could not support life. But after decades of relentless commitment, Mark's insight and determination brought the stream back to life. That is only one example; the same story played out across many such places, restored to health, through Mark's guidance and resolve.
Beyond those professional/vocational efforts, Mark was a cherished friend, always ready to help, assist, and do more than his share of any work to be done. Mark was a class person, in every sense. We will miss him, especially on the streams he so loved.
(The attached photo shows Mark, about two years ago, at an acid mine drainage treatment system he helped design and build on the headwaters of Glade Run, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
Sincerely,
Ben Moyer
President
