Mark was one of the kindest, most dedicated people I know. We became friends over the plight of abandoned mine drainage in the Indian Creek Watershed, more than 130 discharges throughout the 126 square mile watershed. I remember times where our rubber boots were sucked down into the red sludge then talking about how the boots disintegrated several days later.
I was working for the Mountain Watershed Association at the time. The group was just forming over a fight to protect Indian Creek and its tributaries from more underground coal mining. It was a serious battle, and I spent many 60-70 hour weeks working on the problem. Mark worked for the Western PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Restoration at the time.
One day he stopped by the office and said "Get your coat. I want to show you something.". We drove to the Indian Creek Gorge, drove as close as we could and hiked the rest. I was overwhelmed by the pristine beauty of the white water, waterfalls, and tall hemlocks as we hiked around the rocky bed of Indian Creek. It was breathtaking.
He looked at me and simply stated "I wanted you to see what you are fighting for."
MWA is now a strong advocacy group. The gorge is now accessible by bike trail. Mark showed me what we were fighting for. He will be missed.
