Obituary of Carol Ruth Robertson

Carol Ruth Doughty Robertson, age 71, of New Derry, PA died peacefully on February 15, 2015, with her loving family at her side. Carol was born July 21, 1943 in Bainbridge, New York, the daughter of Maurice and Ruth (Armstrong) Doughty. She was a 1961 graduate of Massena High School, and went on to receive her Associates Degree in Secretarial Sciences from the former Rochester Business Institute in 1963. Carol worked for many years for the former Ames Department Store in Geneseo, NY .She retired from Pactiv Manufacturing in Canandaigua, NY after several years of service. Her passion and the job she truly loved was as a Teachers' Aide at the Preschool Wing of the United Cerebral Palsy Association, located within the Al Sigl Center in Rochester, NY, where she began as a volunteer in the late '70's and worked happily for many years. Carol had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, usually accompanied by her big, contagious smile. Other than spending time sharing laughs with family and friends, Carol enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, reading, solving crossword puzzles, and long car rides in the country, particularly if she stumbled over a garage sale or two along the way. Carol is survived by her children: Kimberley Giardina (Spencer Tulis) of Penn Yan, NY, David (Robin) Martz of Dublin, OH, Laurie (Jim) Hadley of Davidson, NC, her grandchildren; Tara Hapke (Jamie Smith) of Livonia, NY, Jason (Tiffany) Holtz of Ontario, NY, David, Jr., Griffin, and Madeline of Dublin, OH, Shane, Colin, & Mason Hadley of Davidson, NC, and by her great-grandsons, James Hapke-Smith, and Joel & Jayden Smith of Livonia, NY. Carol is also survived by her sister Jane (Doug) Loveland of Massena, NY and many, many lifelong friends and extended family members. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, Steven E. Robertson, of Henrietta, NY in 1984. Special thanks to her first husband and the father of her children, William H. Martz, Sr., of New Derry, PA, who graciously and generously provided care and companionship during the final years of Carol's life. Her family also acknowledges and is grateful for the extraordinary care provided by the staff of Windber Hospice. Memorial contributions in Carol's memory may be made to Windber Hospice, c/o Windber Medical Center, 600 Somerset Ave., Windber, PA 15963. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
