Obituary of Bernadette Yancosky Kattera

Mount Pleasant, Bernadette Yancosky Kattera , age 62 of Mount Pleasant PA, died Monday (04/21/14) in the UPMC-Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA. Mrs. Kattera was born July 28, 1951 in Mount Pleasant, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mamie Crivella Yancosky. She was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, where she was a member of its Christian Mothers. Bernie was a 1968 graduate of the Mount Pleasant Area School District. She received her BA in History from Seton Hill and then went on to receive her Masters in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Bernie retired from the Mount Pleasant Area School System, primarily as the Librarian at Rumbaugh and Norvelt Elementary Schools. The year before she retired, she was Librarian at the Senior High School. Bernie was responsible for organizing the Read across America Program in the District. She was loved by her students, and respected by her colleagues for her dedication and contributions to the teaching profession. During her career, Bernie served as president of the Mount Pleasant Area Education Association , and was also very involved with her work as treasurer of the Westmoreland County association of School librarians. She belonged to the Friends of the Mount Pleasant Public Library, the Mount Pleasant Library Book Club, and the Mount Pleasant Historical Society. Bernie loved PBS, old movies, history, and traveling. One of her favorite things to do was sit on the beach and read. Bernie touched the lives of so many people with her kindness and generosity. She will greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her, and will be remembered always for her gentle spirt. Bernie is survived by her loving family: her daughter, Jaclyn Kattera and her fiancé, Nicholas Cerkovnik of Latrobe, her sisters and brother; Anne Forsythe of Scottdale, Joseph "Coke" Yancosky and his wife Carol and Connie Thomas and her husband Terry, all of Mt. Pleasant, and Toni Brown of FL. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. In addition to her parents, Bernie was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Kattera in 2007. Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM and Thursday from 2 to 4 & 6 to 9 PM at the Galone-Caruso Funeral Home, 204 Eagle Street, Mount Pleasant. A blessing service will be held Friday at 12:00-Noon in the funeral home followed by her Funeral Mass at 12:30 PM in St. Pius X RC Church, Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Richard J. Kosisko as celebrant. Interment will be in the Transfiguration Parish Cemetery, Mount Pleasant. A parish wake service will be held in the funeral home Thursday at 3PM.
