Obituary of Nicholas J. Etze

Mount Pleasant, Nicholas J. "Uncle Nick" Etze, age 98 of Mount Pleasant, PA, died Thursday (02/6/14) in the Amber House at Harmon House, Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Etze was born June 19, 1915 in Mount Pleasant, PA, the son of the late Carmine and Antonia Ricci Etze. He was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church. He was a graduate of the former Ramsay High School. Nick was a veteran of WWII proudly serving in the United States Army, Company D. He had been employed by the former Robertshaw Control Company as an Inspector until his retirement. Nick was a very dedicated and active member of the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department for over 73 years. He had served as President, Vice President, Assistant Secretary, Assistant Chief and Captain. He was also a member of the PA State Fireman's Association, the Westmoreland County Fireman's Association, and the Western PA Fireman's Association. He was a member of the American Legion Post 446, the VFW Post 3368, and B.P.O.E. #777 of Scottdale. Nick had been recognized as Mt. Pleasant Citizen of the Year and Elk of the Year. He was also a founding father of the Mt. Pleasant Little League program, of which he was extremely proud. Nick will always be remembered as a dedicated Fireman, who considered his brother fireman his second family. He was very Community minded, a kind and gentle man who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. "Uncle Nick" will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by not only the Mount Pleasant Community, but by many firemen and residents of Westmoreland County and surrounding areas. He touched the lives of many, and will never be forgotten. It was an honor to have had the pleasure of knowing him. Nick is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters, Anthony Etze, Robert Guy Etze, Sam Etze and Carmen Etze, and Infant Sister, Annella Etze and Nellie (Anella) Etze Arrotti. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, At Nick's request, there will be no hours of public visitation. The family is inviting family and friends to attend Nick's Funeral Mass on Tuesday at 10:00AM at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, South Silver and Summit Streets, Mount Pleasant, PA, with the Rev. Richard J. Kosisko as celebrant. Interment with military Rites accorded by the American Legion Post 446, and VFW Post 3368 will be in the St. Pius X Parish Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department, in memory of Nicholas J. Etze.
