Obituary of Philip M. Benedict

Mount Pleasant, Philip M. "Bud" Benedict, age 89 of Mount Pleasant, PA, died Thursday (12/12/13) in the Excela Health- Frick Hospital, Mount Pleasant, PA. Mr. Benedict was born November 26, 1924 in Mount Pleasant, PA, the son of the late Peter and Pearl Carnes Benedict. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ of Mt. Pleasant. and was a 1942 graduate of the former Ramsay High School. Bud worked for most of his life as a printer for Davis and Ward Printing Company, the Mt. Pleasant Journal and St. Vincent College. Bud and his wife Ethel were co-owners of the former Young at Heart Store in Mt. Pleasant for many years. He was a dedicated member of the Assunta Club where he was an officer for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Slovak Club and the Mount Pleasant Fireman's Club. Bud was an avid sports fan, with a special love for the Steelers, Penguins, Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. He was an avid gardener, who enjoyed sharing the produce with his family and friends, and also enjoyed making wine. Bud was very community minded and loved lending a helping hand to the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department during the street fair, working in their food booth. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Bud is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Ethel B. Kring Benedict, and by his loving family: Debbie A. Baughman and William and Marcie L. Sawlsville, all of Mt. Pleasant, Vanessa M. Anderson of United, Wendy K. McCulley of Lancaster, Fred R. Berg and Lori of Mercer, Tim A. Berg of Connellsville, Lisa R. Nene and Jim of New Stanton, and William S. Hart and Tammy of RuffsDale, and numerous Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sisters; Pete "Pick" Benedict of Prittstown, and Pearl Ann Shumar and Christina Kachmarek, both of Mt. Pleasant, by his brother and sisters in law; Harry "Skinny" Kring and Ann, Anna Mae Myers, and Fay Benedict, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, John "Jack" Benedict, and Infant Christopher Benedict, Madalyn "Mannie" Kantorik, and Elsie Biller. Family and friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 & 6 to 9PM at the Galone-Caruso Funeral Home, 204 Eagle Street, Mount Pleasant. Funeral Services will be held Monday at 11:00 AM in the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul R. Sarver officiating. Interment will be in the Green Ridge Memorial Park, Pennsville.
