Obituary of Ernest R. Jacobs

Mount Pleasant, Ernest R. "Ernie" Jacobs, age 100 of Mount Pleasant PA, died Saturday (11/05/2011) in the Amber House at Harmon House, Mount Pleasant, PA. Mr. Jacobs was born November 21, 1910, in the family home on Howard Street in Mount Pleasant, PA, the son of the late Jabur and Fouteen Ghantous Jacobs. Ernie was a 1930 graduate of the former Ramsay High School, where he excelled in football and track. He had played semi-professional football with the Uniontown Golden Tornadoes. In 1935 he joined the family business with his father offering Ladies and Men's clothing. He then married Eleanor (Polly) Slater and in 1949 opened the Jacob's Clothing store. Ernie had served as Vice-President of the Mount Pleasant 125th Anniversary Committee from 1953 to 1954. In 1955 he was President of the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce. He then served as Chairman of the Mount Pleasant Area Development Commission. During his tenure from 1955 to 1958, he was instrumental in the relocation of several manufacturing companies to the Mount Pleasant Community, including Permali and the Modulas Corporation. In 1956, Mr. Jacobs was saddened by yet another fatal runaway truck accident on "Three Mile Hill", Route 31 and initiated a meeting of the PA State Police, the PA Motor Freight Association and Penndot. This meeting led to the establishment of the truck regulations for descending Three Mile Hill which are still in effect today. Mr. Jacobs was an avid golfer and longtime member of the Norvelt Golf League and the Assunta Club Golf League, having won several championships. When Ernie was in his 90's, he was still golfing several times a week. He was a member of the former B.P.O.E #868 of Mount Pleasant, and a long time member of the Mount Pleasant Rotary Club. He is survived by his loving family: his sons; E. Neil Jacobs of Oakland, MD.,Thomas S. Jacobs and his wife Faye of Laguna Nigel, CA, and his grandson; Christopher Jacobs of CA. He will be sadly missed by his great granddaughters: Emily, Eliza and Charlotte Jacobs, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor (Polly) Slater Jacobs in 1956, his grandsons, Darrell Jacobs and Owen Jacobs, and by his brothers, Samuel and John Jacobs and his sisters, Betty Donnelly, Ida Yesbak and Genevieve Sopcisak. Family and friends will be received Monday from 6 to 8 PM and Tuesday from 10 to 12-noon at the Galone-Caruso Funeral Home, 204 Eagle Street, Mount Pleasant, where a private funeral service will follow, with the Rev.
