William V. Schomp Jr.

1937 – 2024

 

William V. “Van” Schomp Jr., 87, of Stoystown, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital surrounded by family on December 2, 2024.

 

Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on March 27, 1937 to William V. Schomp Sr. and Amanda (Cleaves) Schomp. He served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1959, in which he did a tour to Antarctica. He then worked as a coal truck short hauler for 3-S Coal Co. and a long haul trucker for Croner Cartage of Berlin.  William enjoyed bicycling, hiking, woodworking, cooking, listening to jazz, building model trains, and spending time with his family. He approached life with enthusiasm, determination, and creativity.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Sandra Schomp, infant son Royal, grandson Jeremy Krause and dear friend Stephen Murphy. He is survived by siblings; Cindy (Richard) Fink, and Royal Schomp; children, Lisa Gardiner, William V. Schomp III, Philip C. Schomp, and Ana (Ryan) Opdyke; grandchildren, Megan (Patrick) Booley, Aaron Gardiner, Jacob (Rachel) Gardiner, Marguerite Keisling, Philip W. Schomp, McKenna, Logan, and Carter Opdyke; great grandchildren, Rylan, Anthony, and Roulette; niece Heather Halberstadt and nephew Andrew Fink. 

 

At his request, there are no funeral services. A burial service will be held in the spring.
