Obituary of Daniel W. Kelly Jr.

Daniel William “Danny” Kelly, Jr., 77, of Mount Pleasant passed away March 24, 2023 at Latrobe Hospital. He was born July 27, 1945 in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Daniel William Kelly, Sr. and Evelyn (Jacobs) Kelly. He is survived by his sister Patricia Kwak of Mt. Pleasant, brother David Kelly of Washington, DC, sisters-in-law Sandra Kelly of Harmony, PA and Kathleen Kelly of Washington, DC, and nieces and nephews Kelly Kwak Vernon, Heather Kelly, Erin Kelly Melo, Patrick Kelly, Jr., Justin Kelly, Jarrod Kelly, Emily Kelly, Rachel Kelly, Laura Kelly, Daniel Kelly, Michael Kelly, and Hannah Kelly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers James Kelly and Patrick Kelly, Sr. He was a 1963 graduate of Ramsay High School.

Danny served in the United States Navy for four years and was honorably discharged in 1971. For more than two years he was a member of the Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron FOUR (HS-4) stationed on the USS Yorktown during which he actively participated in missions to rescue downed Navy pilots in Vietnam as well as Apollo moon mission capsule recoveries. Danny received a number of medals and commendations during his service, including a Vietnam Service medal with a Bronze Star and a Vietnam Campaign Medal. Danny loved seeing the world and his military service allowed him to visit Hong Kong, Australia, Tahiti, American Samoa, and Singapore. He was well known around Mt. Pleasant for his grant writing for various organizations, his painting and drywall business, his love of sports, and his keen memory and intellect. 

Family and friends will be received Friday March 31st from 10:00 AM until the hour of the Funeral Service at 12:00 PM at Galone-Caruso Funeral Home, 204 Eagle St., Mt. Pleasant.  Interment will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to the Mt.
