Obituary of Susan Carol Kirik

Susan Carol Kirik, 77, of Rock Island, IL, was called by Our Lord on Friday, October 6, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, IA, surrounded by her husband, Jack, her son, Jay Talley, brother, Albert Vogt, and sister, Sandy Whalen. Sue grew up in St. Louis, the daughter of Albert and Mabel Kelly Vogt. During her childhood, Sue developed many talents. At Bayless High School, she played first chair saxophone in the orchestra and in the band, and she was on the band executive committee. She was president of the pep club and the girls' athletic association, vice president of the secretary's club, and captain of the basketball, volleyball, and field hockey teams. Sue averaged 30-plus points per game in basketball and held the school scoring record when she graduated in 1957. She was a classic over-achiever in a family of over-achievers. Sue went on to attend the University of Missouri, where she met Cliff Talley, Jr., a Mizzou basketball player. Cliff and Sue were married in 1958, and eventually settled in East Moline, IL. They had two children, Lynda Talley Moore and Jay Talley, prior to divorcing in 1974. As a single parent, Sue's highest priority was her family. She selflessly dedicated her life to creating a warm and nurturing home for Lynda and Jay, while juggling the demands of her full-time career and the kids' sports schedules. While working at Deere & Co, Sue met Jack Kirik, and they were inseparable after their first date. They were married in 1985 on Sue's birthday. Whether traveling the world, or visiting her children and grandchildren, they were a team that God brought together. The strength of their relationship and faith in God helped Sue through the loss of her daughter, Lynda, after she lost her battle with cancer on November 29, 2014. Lynda's passing was tragic and devastating on Sue's entire family. Over the past three years, Sue was blessed to be comforted by her loving family and her undeterred faith in God. Sue retired from Deere & Co in 1999, after twenty-four years of service. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Moline, and was very active with many of her friends in the Elizabeth Jane Brashear Circle of Kings Daughters. She was a gracious host, an excellent decorator, a fabulous cook and baker, and the most caring, gentle, honest and selfless person one could ever meet. Sue was a truly amazing person who will be dearly missed by many. She embodied grace and compassion, and she touched everyone she met with her charm and sincerity. Sue loved her family deeply and unconditionally. We are blessed to have so many memories of her spirit and the joy she inspired in all who met her. May she forever rest in peace with her mother and father, Mabel and Albert Vogt, and daughter, Lynda, who preceded her in death. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Jack; son, Jay (Noreen) Talley of Newport Beach, CA; brothers, Albert Vogt of Columbia, MO, and Bill (Debra) Vogt of Huntington Beach, CA; sister, Sandy (Bill) Whalen of Kewanee, IL; son-in-law, Jody Moore of Fort Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren, Elizabeth of Hollywood, CA, R J, Mary Katherine, and Ryan Moore of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Ethan and Lauren Talley of Newport Beach, CA; along with numerous nephews and nieces.
