Obituary of Judith Kadylak Henry

Judith J. (Kadylak) Henry, age 67 of Beech Hills, Hempfield Township, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Tuesday August 14, 2018 at her home after a 5 year chapter of learning to live with metastatic breast cancer.

Judy was born to the children of immigrant grandparents who came to the US through Ellis Island from the CarpathoRusyn region of Eastern Europe, Anna and Andrew Adzima, and Justina and Stephen Kadylak. As a second generation born American citizen, she is a true Baby Boomer, born on Veterans Day 1950 to John and Margaret Kadylak while the Annual Veterans  Day Parade marched down Main Street in Mt. Pleasant past Frick Hospital. Her father, a WWII Army veteran who received a purple heart from injuries suffered at the Normandy invasion, said to her mother, “Maybe she’ll be an Army nurse.” He was half right. Judy chose nursing as her career. Judy graduated from the Presbyterian-University (now UPMC Presbyterian) Hospital School of Nursing in 1971 and went on to further her education with Baccalaureate and Masters Degrees in nursing from La Roche College. Her career included wonderful opportunities to work and travel the world with world reknown Pediatric researchers based in Pittsburgh at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (now UPMC Children’s Hospital) in the fields of Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Medical Genetics, and clinical research trials spanning a career of 45 years. She was a founding member and former Board member of the Pediatric Endocrinology Nursing Society, a member of International Society of Nurses in Genetics, a member of the International Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau, The Presbyterian-University Nursing Alumnae Association, and a Board Member of the Kane Foundation, Allegheny County.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Kadylak, Sr. in 1978, and an infant sister Marilyn Jeanne in 1953. She is survived by her devoted husband of 35 years, Edward C. Henry, III, a true Renaissance man, her beloved mother and safe haven, Margaret Adzima Kadylak, 2 sisters: Patricia and husband Richard Bohinc of Cary, NC and their daughter Jillian and granddaughter Kaylee Bohinc; and sister, Debra Huck and husband Donald of Sanford NC, and their children: Nathan and Amanda Stairs of Apex NC and children Adileigh and Grady; Jenna and Joshua Simmons of Winston-Salem NC and their children Jax and Crosby; and Summer and Andrew Clark of Concord NC and their children Sydney and Zachary; a brother, John Kadylak, Jr. and wife Sandra of Latrobe and their children: Justi and Bryan Shaffer of East Petersburg, PA and their children Lila, Lukas, and Bennett, and Jessica and Trevor Leonard of Philadelphia and their son Lido; a sister-in-law Suzanne Henry Goldsmith of Ft Walton Beach, FL, her godmother, Frances Kadylak of Harrison City, a paternal aunt Elizabeth Kadylak of North Olmstead, OH, godson Jon Klejka of Kecksburg, and devoted cousins: Maryann Kuruce, Michael Zizan, Michael Kadylak, Ron Kadylak, Teresa Rinehart, Stephen Kadylak, David Kadylak, Janet Fallot, Chris Kadylak, Janet Straub, Carol Hunten, Barbara Oyer, Kenny Kiely, and Leonard Bender, Gary Bender, John Bender, Tom Bender, and Stephen Bender.

The Old World values brought from Eastern Europe with her grandparents were the foundation of her life – God and family first. She celebrated all the unique ethnic traditions they brought with them, especially at Easter and Christmas. She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Her family and friends were most important to her and she treasured many life-long friendships from all chapters of her life. She was a life long member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, Scottdale, PA, a member of their Altar Society, assistant to the priest at his request during transition of revised financial reporting, and was the editor of the church’s commemorative booklet celebrating 100 years of church history. Gardening was her passion and she transformed her backyard into a venerable Eden.
