Obituary of Joseph Wilmer Hartman, Jr..

Joseph Wilmer Hartman Jr., (HTC USNR Ret.) age 80 of Acme, PA, died Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Hempfield Manor, Greensburg, PA.

Mr. Hartman was born May 20, 1937 in Greensburg, PA, the son of the late Joseph and Helen Kintz Hartman. He was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church. Joe was a 1955 graduate of the former Ramsay High School. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War who was on active duty from 1958 to 1963, serving aboard the USS HASSAYAMPA, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as Hull Maintenance Technician Chief Petty Officer, supporting units of the 7th fleet moving 6 thousand Marines into Thailand to prevent a flare-up in Vietnam and Laos. From 1963-1964, Joe was Stand by Ready Reserves. His Reserve Duty continued for over 20 years; 1979-1980 NR Sima Charleston, S.C. Det 805, 1980-1984 NR FF 1080 Joseph Hewes Det 7, 1984-1986 NR Cargo Handling Battalion 9 Det A 105, 1986-1995 NR Sima Charleston, S.C. Det 805, and 1995-1997 NR AD-41 Yellowstone Det 21. After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he returned home to continue the business that had been founded by his parents in 1946 as Hartman Maytag Sales and Service that still operates today as Cabin Hill Maytag and Sleepsource in Greensburg run by his son Mark . Joe was a member of the American Legion Post 446, the VFW Post 3368, an active member of the Armbrust Veterans Association, Westmoreland County Vietnam Veterans Assoc. and the USS Hassayampa Assoc. Joe had served as an EMT for Mt. Pleasant Medic 10, was a member of the National Ski Patrol at 7 Springs, and Hidden Valley Resorts, and was an Eagle Scout and former Scout Master of Troop 135.

Joe is survived by his loving family: his sons, Michael Hartman of Mt. Pleasant, Mark Hartman and his wife Jen of Greensburg, and his brother, Robert Hartman and his wife Betty of Plymouth, Mass. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Lee Hartman of Wyoming, and his sister,Jeanne Leas of Texas.

 

Family and friends will be received Monday July 24, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM at the Galone-Caruso Funeral Home, 204 Eagle Street, Mount Pleasant.

Private Inurnment will be in the St. Vincent Cemetery, Latrobe, with the Rev. Richard J. Kosisko officiating. The Armbrust Veterans Association will accord military Honors.
